Future Co-ops 2019 – Our Programme
We’ve decided this year to break the mould! So instead of the usual conference format of listening to a bunch of speakers, we’ll be rolling up our sleeves and getting stuck in to some novel, engaging problem-solving techniques focused on how to grow more co-ops, mutuals and community enterprises, make existing enterprises better and bigger, and particularly looking at how to make co-op deserts more fertile.
The techniques we’ll be using are delivered by Central England Co-op’s innovation team, Think:Digital. They’re refining some powerful and fun participatory problem-solving techniques that you’ll learn at the conference and then take away and apply to your own challenges.
Friday 1st February 2019
Arrival from 16.00
Refreshments, registration and exhibition.
17:00 – Introduction
Where do co-ops thrive and where don’t they? We’ll be introducing the theme of the conference and what we hope to achieve over the weekend.
You’ll also get to meet the team from Think:Digital who will introduce the participatory problem solving techniques that we’ll be using during the conference.
17:45 – Investigation
During this session, you’ll be dissecting co-op case studies to find the clues to success and failure. It’s a hands-on approach, so be prepared to get stuck in. Expect post-its, sharpies, stickers and healthy debate!
Time to re-fuel, network and reflect on the challenges posed so far…

An introduction to the day for new arrivals and a reminder for those who stayed the night
09:30 – Nailing down the problem
Central England Co-op’s Think:Digital team are leading our first session of the day, so expect more sharpies, post-its and audience participation!
They’ll be showing us how problem solving (like how to increase the number, size and effectiveness of co-ops…) can be both fun and effective, if you approach it right. The first step is identifying the problems we’re looking to address.
10:30 – Coffee and networking.

11:00 – Teamworking
For the second session of the morning, you’ll be working in groups using a technique designed to help you create large numbers of ideas and potential solutions. It’s all about quantity at this stage!
12:30 – Lunch
And more networking.
13:30 – Teamworking 2 – the sequel
Building on the morning’s work, we’ll be honing and refining our ideas to find achievable solutions. Here’s where we sort the wheat from the chaff and dig down to find those quality gems.
15:00 – Tea and networking.

By this point in the day we should have some great potential solutions to the issues we’re looking to address. During this session, we’ll feedback on these, discuss, debate, vote for your favourites and decide some take-away actions.
