Co-operative Futures is currently supporting a group of local residents to establish a Cleaning Co-operative in the Ladywood area of Birmingham. This work is supported by the USE-IT! programme, of which Co-op Futures is a key delivery partner.
There is a strong sense of place for the residents of Ladywood and a great desire to create a community business to provide local jobs for local people. There are a number of large scale developments happening in and around the area, such as new office blocks including the HSBC head office, and the Port Loop housing development of over 1,000 new homes. There is therefore huge opportunity for cleaning services to be provided by a trusted local community business.
Work has begun to secure some start-up capital, provide training for potential co-op members, and explore contract opportunities.
